Nawazuddin Siddiqui interview: On ‘Rautu Ka Raaz’ and taking inspiration from Malayalam cinema

“The world may stick to formulas, but I will continue to experiment,” says Nawazuddin Siddiqui, in Delhi to talk about Anand Surpur Rautu’s secret, About his latest character study of a “slow-witted” police officer from a quiet village in Uttarakhand, which is untouched by crime until a murder disturbs the peace of the place, the versatile actor says he does not have secrets like Bollywood stars.

“My life is like an open book. Even when I tried to keep something away from public discussion, I was not given that privilege.” Still, he says this does not affect the variety of roles he is offered.

“I have never been conscious of my image. Heroes keep their personal image away from the film but still do the same thing on screen. I have been fortunate that the industry has given me the opportunity to play such different characters as (Saadat Hasan) Manto and (Balasaheb) Thackeray. They were not only very different from each other but also from who I am and where I come from. I am yet to do a film set in western Uttar Pradesh where I get to speak the local language.”

When he was shooting at an influential police officer StoryHe was also playing the role of physically handicapped Taimur Langda in it seek. “I have developed a resistance to mold,” he stressed.

Nawaz, who prefers shooting in real locations rather than on sets in Film City, says, “The environment speaks to an actor and gives a kick that brings a natural appeal to the character. On set, it becomes a bit mechanical… I realised this early in my career when I shot a short film with Irrfan Brother In the desert of Jaisalmer.”

Negi, Police Officer Rautu’s secrets, It is not as sharp and quick as Story, He says, Nawaz explains it is due to his circumstances and location. “He is suffering from a personal trauma due to which he is unable to sleep properly and behaves strangely during investigations. There is a name for this condition,” he says, referring to post-traumatic stress disorder.

Again, he says, the film is set in a slow-paced atmosphere, and the story follows the languid life in the hills “where silence matters” and, “you can hear your own voice”. “We spent several days in the region before shooting. Nawaz, who is not happy with the way a section of the streaming platform is progressing, Photo (2019) and serious man (2020) as his most important work in the past decade, he said it seems like lavish big-budget projects and stars are eager to occupy the space that was originally meant for quality world cinema.

he looks at Photo, Ritesh Batra’s unique romantic drama between a street photographer and a talented student is a milestone because “usually we talk about extraordinary characters, but here is a man you won’t give a second glance to and, more importantly, till the end, you don’t really know if the two loved each other or not.”

“In life, you meet a female acquaintance with whom you spend time and feel good, but when she moves on, you are left wondering if something happened anasiyat “I think it (affection) is there or not,” Nawaz says.

He doesn’t buy the idea that political interference or the political environment has changed the nature of content on streaming platforms. “It is a result of internal tussle and competition to outdo each other. Those who are engaged in making propaganda films are doing so on their own; the ministry is not forcing them to do so. Similarly, no one has stopped us from making or releasing films. Rumor (On rumours and fake news being spread on social media) The distribution system was responsible for its performance at the box office. It was released in only 50 theatres. I am waiting for the time when a film starring actors like Nawazuddin, Manoj Bajpayee or Pankaj Tripathi will get 5,000 screens. People want to watch our films, at least give us a chance,” he says.

He believes it is not the idea but the budget that fails, and the chances of budget going wrong are higher for stars than actors like him. “OTT releases eliminate the box-office mark of hits and flops, and we know who is more concerned about image.”

Nawaz has hope from young filmmakers who are influenced by “Bollywood” and regional cinema, especially Malayalam. “The way Malayalam cinema stars are experimenting with content, we should take inspiration from it. Who would have thought Mammootty would explore such a subject Kathal,

But he also admits that experimentation and relying too much on youth has a flip side, as he saw in his last two-three films where it seemed that the makers trusted only his acting. “When you take risks, this is bound to happen. Sometimes the storytelling goes astray and sometimes the editing lets you down, but one must keep trying.”
