Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for Babygirl. She was unable to attend the ceremony after receiving news of her mother’s death.
Nicole Kidman has decided not to attend the North American premiere of her upcoming film Babygirl at the Toronto International Film Festival as she continues to mourn the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman. Helena came on stage and introduced the film before the premiere. She then addressed Nicole’s absence and said, “We’ve just come back from Venice where our film had its world premiere, and it was quite an emotional experience as you may have read because Nicole Kidman had just won the Best Actress award.”
He added, “Unfortunately, right before she was supposed to go on stage and accept the award, she got the sad news of her mother’s passing and she had to rush to her family, and that’s why she’s not with us tonight. But she wanted to let us all know that she was very excited for this day. It’s very special to us. It’s our North American premiere.”

Nicole was announced the winner of the Volpi Cup for Best Actress by jury president Isabelle Huppert at the closing ceremony of the Venice Film Festival. There, too, Halina took the stage, and read a statement on Nicole’s behalf: “Today, I arrived in Venice and learned that my brave and beautiful mother, Janelle Anne Kidman, has passed away. I am in shock and have to go to my family, but this award is for her.”
The statement further said, “She shaped me, she guided me and she created me. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to share her name with all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking. My heart is broken.”
In Babygirl, Nicole plays a successful businesswoman who is living a comfortable personal life with her husband Antonio Banderas. Trouble arises when a new intern Harris Dickinson joins her company and she begins to have a relationship with him. The film will be released in US theaters by A24 on December 25.
