Skin care becomes very important during the hot and humid months. We are very careful about our daytime routine, but nighttime routine is often overlooked. According to Ayurveda experts, taking special care of your skin before sleeping helps in keeping the skin healthy. Dr. Yamuna BS, Chief Physician, Guduchi Ayurveda says, “Everything in the universe is made up of 5 elements which include earth, fire, water, air and sky. The three doshas are made up of the combination of these 5 elements – Vata dosha, Pitta dosha and Kapha dosha. Ayurveda emphasizes on natural ingredients and practices that align with your dosha, focusing on cooling and calming practices during summers.” He explains the right way to go about a nighttime routine.
Nighttime skincare routine: Follow these steps daily in summer
Dr. Yamuna BS suggests the following remedies that you should follow at night to improve your skin health:
1. To create an ideal nighttime Ayurvedic routine, start by cleansing your face with a gentle, natural cleanser suitable for your skin type. For oily or combination skin, a cleanser made with neem or tea tree can be effective, while for dry or sensitive skin, a cleanser made with milk or sandalwood works well.
2. In the next step, wash your face with lukewarm water to remove impurities, sweat and excess oil accumulated throughout the day.
3. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week using a gentle exfoliant such as gram flour, turmeric and a few drops of rose water. Mix it into a paste and gently rub it on your face to remove dead skin cells, then wash it off with lukewarm water.

4. After cleansing and exfoliating the face, apply a natural toner like rose water or cucumber water directly on your face with the help of a cotton pad or spray and let it air dry to tighten the pores and refresh the skin.
5. After this, use any cooling serum or gel like aloe vera or cucumber, apply a small amount of it on your face and massage gently, this will moisturize the skin and reduce inflammation.
6. Those with oily skin should use a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer or a few drops of jojoba oil for moisturizing, while those with dry skin can opt for a richer moisturizer like almond oil or coconut oil mixed with a few drops of essential oils like lavender or sandalwood. Apply a small amount and gently massage in an upward circular motion to hydrate and nourish your skin overnight.
