In 1989, actor Nina Gupta chose a child out of marriage with West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards when he made headlines.
In his autobiography Sach kahun tohNina opened the decision and how did it change her life.
When he first came to know about his pregnancy, he felt “Gidi with Joy”, but also felt that it was important to inform Vivian. At that time, he had already returned home. After a long phone call, Nina shared that Vivian supported his decision to keep the child, which gave her the confidence to move forward.
Nina first met Vivian at a dinner party organized by the Queen of Jaipur, playing her shortly after. They immediately joined but lost touch when they returned home, as they did not exchange contact details. He again met at Delhi Airport and soon started a relationship.
When she came to know that she was pregnant, Nina received mixed advice from the people around her. Some suggested “abortion”, while others warned of the challenges of single motherhood. But after considering everything, he decided to continue with pregnancy.
He said, “Vivian and I had an affair, and I became pregnant. Some people advised me to do an abortion. Others warned against the crisis of being a single parents. I heard everyone patiently. They were all very worried, I know I came back home and alone, I asked myself: What do you think?
He continued, “I also understood that I was not the only person who had someone to say. The child’s father, Vivian had an equal right. So, I called him one day and talked to him for a long time,” He wrote and said, “I am pregnant”, I told him. ” Vivian happy and said that I should move forward.
He said that “included as much as possible” after the birth of Vivian Masaba. Their relationship continued for a few years, passing through various stages. At that time, Vivian was already married, and there were ups and downs in their long distance relationship.
“Our relationship continued for a few years and we had some beautiful moments and some were also ugly. It was a long distance and a very different relationship,” she concluded.
Nina raised Masaba as the same mother. Years later, she married a chartered accountant Vivek Mehra at the age of 59.
