Ten years ago, a group of men and women who grew up in the heyday of rock and rock in the sixties and seventies came together to play, sing and listen to their own kind of music. Naming themselves Hard Days Night (HDN), they began holding concerts in Thiruvananthapuram, singing the chartbusters they had heard as teenagers and students. They also provided a platform for many bands to showcase their repertoire.
Tommy Cherian, one of the founders of HDN, recalls how they celebrated the 50th anniversary.th A concert was held on the Woodstock anniversary featuring local bands.
Tomy says, “Recently one of our members heard a concert by Rear Admiral (Retd) Nirmala Kannan. She was singing some of the greatest songs of our times. We decided it would be great if we could organise a concert of hers in Thiruvananthapuram. Incidentally, her husband Vice Admiral (Retd) Bhagavatheeswaran Kannan has his roots in Thiruvananthapuram.”
On June 8, Nirmala will perform at a charity concert called Hope and Harmony at the Trivandrum Club, followed by a performance by HDN musicians. Management consultant Shankar Krishnan, a member of HDN, says they have decided to donate the proceeds from the concert to the 50-year-old Rotary Institute for Children in Need of Special Needs in Thiruvananthapuram.
Shankar says, “The institute currently has over 100 students and is in a very difficult situation. It mainly caters to students from economically weaker backgrounds. Principal Beena AR, dedicated teachers and caring people are managing to run the institute with great difficulty.”
The programme will begin with a recital by the institute’s children at 6.30pm, followed by Nirmala’s concert at 7pm. From 8.30pm onwards, HDN’s musicians will take the stage, followed by dinner.
Music lovers can listen to some amazing old songs and donate to a good cause by getting passes for the concert.
