Veteran actor Arun Govil, who was immortally in Indian television history to play Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayana’, has had a warm conversation with his recent comments about Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming cinematic epic. In a clear interview, Govil questioned whether today’s actor – even the most prominent stars – are actually suited to portray Lord Ram on screen.
Govil’s concerns have come around ‘Ramayana’, in which Ranbir Kapoor has starred as Lord Ram. The film, which will be released in two parts on Diwali 2026 and 2027, has already attracted focus to its star-stoded actors and ambitious realms.
Maybe you can find someone outside the industry
Talking to NDTV, Govil expressed his reservation about casting in spiritually important roles of modern actors. “Three-four people tried to make it again, but they were not successful. I don’t think someone should try to re-make Ramayana during our lifetime,” he said. His comments were directed on the tendency of high-budget adaptation, especially after the controversial reception of Edipurash, in which Prabhas played the role of Lord Ram.
Addressing the current generation of actors, he said, “As far as some actor Ram plays (worried), all the available actors, all the stars at this time – don’t think anyone is suitable. You might find someone outside the industry.”
Netizens reacts to taking clear taking of Govil
Unexpectedly, the actor’s comment has trusted a debate on social media. While some people agreed with Govil’s spirit, others defended the developed nature of cinematic interpretations, pointing their prestigious depiction as unmatched, in which creative Liberty filmmakers such as Nitesh Tiwari are also bringing in the table.
Ranbir Kapoor’s casting, in particular, has been found with mixed reactions since the announcement, and Govil’s words have only added fuel to the discussion. The supporters of Tiwari’s vision, however, urged fans to wait and see how the project comes out on the screen.
What do we know about Tiwari’s Ramayana
Despite the controversy, ‘Ramayana’ is one of the highest anticipated films of the decade. Along with Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi as Sita in the film, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Yash-Joe also co-produce the film-as Ravana. The dress also includes Lara Dutta, Anil Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, Kunal Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan, although an official confirmation of full artists is awaited.
For now, Arun Govil’s comments have put a new spotlight on the delicate balance between reverence and reinforcement in the mythological story tell.
