Noise at Diljit Dosanjh’s concert exceeded limits, Chandigarh administration informs High Court

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh administration on Wednesday told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the noise level during singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s concert here on Saturday was above the prescribed limit.

This argument was given before the division bench of the High Court on behalf of the administration.

The court was further told that “strict action” has been recommended against the violators.

On December 13, the High Court had allowed Dosanjh’s event to be held the next evening, with directions that the organizers follow noise pollution rules.

While giving the green signal to the program on Friday, a division bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetrapal had directed that ambient air quality standards for noise be strictly maintained.

Recently, a Chandigarh resident had filed a PIL, seeking directions to the Union Territory Administration on the management of public events at the Sector 34 Exhibition Ground, including noise pollution and crowd control.

As soon as the administration was asked to file a status report, its standing counsel filed an affidavit before the High Court in the matter.

It mentioned that acting on the directions of the High Court, the Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh constituted a committee and noise monitoring was carried out during the entire live concert.

“During the concert of artist Diljit Dosanjh held on 14.10.2024, noise levels were monitored at various locations and it was observed that the noise levels were more than the limits prescribed under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 .

“Accordingly, action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 is proposed vide letter dated 16.12.2024,” the Chandigarh administration’s affidavit said.

Last week, the high court had said it had no hesitation in granting permission to hold the event, provided that ambient air quality standards with respect to noise at the boundary of the public place were maintained at a maximum limit of 75 dB(A) . An event is to be held.

Hearing the PIL, the court had ordered, “If the noise level increases beyond 75 dB(A), the official respondents have the power to take punitive action against the organizers as per the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control Rules) 2000.” Instructions are given.” ,

Dosanjh’s concert was organized here on Saturday evening. The singer began the India leg of his Dil-Luminati Tour from Delhi in October.
