Oru Kadhai Oru Kolai – Good topic gone astray

exactly title oru kadhai oru kolai There is a hint of a thriller. But Prayat Theatre’s latest play (story, dialogues and direction by K. Vivekshankar) lacked suspense. She walked smoothly like an elderly woman out for a walk.

One day, a customer arrives at Dharma’s door, except this unexpected visitor is an amnesiac ghost! The ghost wants to know who is responsible for his death. Then the investigation begins and a woman who deals in ghosts is brought in to help. This scene was embarrassing.

One begins to wonder what the playwright is trying to achieve through this play. If it was intended to simply be a funny drama, it failed, as only a few scenes were mildly funny. At last the message arrived.

Ignoring mental illness is at your own risk. Unfortunately, society views depression as something that should not be addressed, and so people put a blanket over mental illnesses, hoping that they will go away. They will not do that, and this is what Vivek Shankar wanted to say.

Really a good topic. But the meaningless path he took to reach here was surprising. Take Padma’s reaction to her daughter’s death, for example. She has become chirpy within a few days, although she has raised her only child single-handedly since childhood. And when compensation for the girl’s death arrives, she becomes elated! Vivek Shankar has given some very good plays in the past also. It was extremely disappointing and unbelievable that this drama came from him.
