The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday announced the creation of an annual competitive Academy Award for achievement in stunt design.
The inclusion of this novel category will begin in 2027 with the 100th Academy Awards for films released in 2027.
According to the outlet, director and manufacturer David Latch led the initiative on behalf of the Stunt community to make the new official Oscar category an institute.
Leach had a special relationship with this category as he started his career as a stunt artist in the film industry before being directed. He, stunt coordinator and designer Chris O’Hara of Stunts Unlimited, and others gave several presentations to the academy, allowing the Board of Governors to approve the new award category today.

As per the outlet, the eligibility for the inaugural award and the category of Category for the award will be declared in the Rules 2027 with full 100th Academy Awards Rules.
The nuances of the award presentation will later be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and Executive Leadership. The last new award created at the Oscar was the achievement in the casting established in category 2024. It will begin with next year’s 98th Academy Awards for films released in 2025.
In a statement by the variety, Jeff Wolf, president of the Stuntman Association, expressed his happiness over the announcement of the stunt design category. He called it a “historical moment” for his community (stuntman).
