The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will officially recognize the art of stunt work with a new Oscar category for the best stunt design, making debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028 for films released in 2027. The long -awaited trick is a historic milestone for a discipline that is partial from its early days.
The declaration follows the years of advocacy from within the industry, leading in large part by director and former stuntman David Leach Fall singing, Bullet trainAnd Deadpool 2Working with experienced stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara, the leach gave several formal presentations at the academy, which eventually the Board of Governors approved the new category.
“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang said in a joint statement. “We are proud to respect the innovative work of these technical and creative artists.”
Leach said the decision “a long journey for many of us”, “Chris O’Hara and I have spent years to work to bring this moment to life, standing on the shoulders of stunts professionals who have tirelessly struggled for recognition in decades.”
Director Chad Stahlsky Off John Vik Fame praised the move as a thoughtful acceptance of the collaborative nature of stunt teams. “It was very nice to see that the academy really heard the voice of the stunt committee,” he told that DiversityKeeping in mind the importance of rewarding a department rather than a person.
Accurate criteria for the new category and polling rules 2027 will be mentioned in the Academy Award Rules Rules. Meanwhile, details about the presentation format of the award will be fixed in the coming years.
Jeff Wolf, president of the Stuntman Association, called the move “a historic moment for our community”, insisting that it validate “passion, innovation, creativity and hard work that goes into every decline, fight and fire balls.”
