The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has strongly refuted claims that the 97th Oscars ceremony, scheduled for March 2, is on the verge of cancellation. The rumors originated from a story published by a UK tabloid Sunwhich alleged that “secret contingency plans” were made to cancel the event due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. hollywood reporter has confirmed that these claims are completely false.

Senior Academy sources clarified that there are no plans to cancel the ceremony and no such advisory committee exists, which reportedly includes celebrities like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. The sole body responsible for Oscar-related decisions is the Academy’s 55-person Board of Governors. While the wildfires have prompted some adjustments, such as extending the nomination voting period and postponing the Oscar nominee luncheon, the board has confirmed that the awards ceremony will proceed as planned.

However, the Academy has acknowledged the impact of the wildfires, which have claimed 25 lives and destroyed several homes, including the homes of celebrities such as Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton. Academy leadership is exploring ways to incorporate fire relief efforts into the ceremony to support affected communities.

Despite false reports, the Oscars’ long-standing tradition of perseverance remains unbroken. Even during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was never canceled and Academy insiders insist on its commitment to continue holding the event.

Changes to the event’s luxury goodie bags, worth $171,000, are reportedly under consideration, with items such as spa treatments and Swiss Alps holidays deemed to be in “bad taste” amid the crisis.

With nominees to be announced on January 23, the Academy is focused on hosting a dignified ceremony that balances celebration with compassion for those affected by the ongoing wildfires.
