Padma Vibhan singer Pandit Chhanulal Mishra funeral with state honor in Varanasi

Varanasi: Padma Vibhuhan singer Pandit Chhanulal Mishra, who died on Thursday at the age of 89 at the residence of Namrata at his residence in Gangdrashan Colony of Mirzapur, was held at Manikarnika Ghat with full state honors.


His grandson performed the last rites.


The mortal remains of Pandit Mishra were brought to his ancestral house, small cow, Varanasi at 12:30 pm, where a large crowd, in which UP Minister Dr. Dayashankar Mishra, Varanasi Mayor, several MLAs, District Magistrates and Commissioner of Police, paid their honor. Padma Shri folk singer Malini Awasthi and classical singer Dr. Tributes were paid to members of the music fraternity including Soma Ghosh.


Born on August 3, 1936, in a village in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, Pandit Mishra received his initial music training from his father and later took formal training in Benaras. He carried out extensive protection under Ustad Abdul Gani Khan of Kiran Gharana and became a famous exponent of Banaras Gharana, especially Khayal and Purba Anga Thumri for his mastery. His intimate performance earned him both national and international recognition.

Pandit Mishra received several prestigious awards, including Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Naushad Award, Yash Bharti Award, Padma Bhushan in 2010 and Padma Vibhushan in 2020.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed grief over the death of mythological classical singer Pandit Chhanulal Mishra, describing him as an artist, who dedicated his entire life to enrich India’s cultural heritage. Famous classical singer Pandit Chanulal Mishra ji.


The Prime Minister also remembered that the late Mestro was his proponent from Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency and expressed condolences to Mishra’s family and fans.


He has survived four daughters and a son.


Famous for his exemplary singing skills, Pandit Chhanulal Mishra’s performance was intimate and melodious, who gained both national and international fame. He was also considered a major force of Purba Aung’s ‘Thumri’ style.
