Palash Sen talks about the pressure young artistes face in an industry dominated by music labels.
Singer Palash Sen, who made waves in the 2000s with his independent music band Euphoria, says independent music is once again making its mark in the country, but many young musicians are afraid to speak the truth to power. “Definitely, independent music has gotten better. Everyone has started speaking about it. Young musicians don’t want to be slaves of the system,” says 58-year-old Palash.
He admits there is politics in the music industry, just like society. When asked if young artistes have shared their concerns with him, Sen says, “Of course, but they can’t speak up. People are scared. Someone in control can turn around and say tu zyada bol raha hai tujha kaam nahi doonga.”

Sen feels the way the music industry works in the US is better for artistes. “In the US, the film industry and the music industry are separate. If you want to do something, do it in your own industry. If the film industry wants your music, it will buy it from you. It will not employ you like slaves.”
The composer will soon be re-releasing his two popular albums Dhoom and Maari. Sen is working with several new composers for the songs. “Many young artistes will be involved. We are already bringing in several composers to be a part of the Euphoria legacy. I have never sold myself to the film industry,” says Sen.
He said, “If even one percent of these youngsters understand what I or Euphoria have done, I feel my work will be done. That’s the best thing I can do.”
