Pitu Paksha is the time of remembrance and mourning – not a celebration. Therefore, starting new business, buying property, marriage, or demonstrating a housewife is strictly discouraged. These activities are believed to be considered to bring inauspicious energy during this period.
2. Do not disrespect food or waste offerings
Food plays a central role in Pitu Paksha rituals. “Pind Dan” (offering rice balls and sesame) and “Shraddha Bhojan” (feast or needy for Brahmins) symbolize the departed souls. Wasting food or showing disrespect to these offerings is considered deeply aggressive for the ancestors.
3. Never cut hair or beard without reason
Traditionally, it is recommended that you cut your hair, beard or trim nails during Pitu Laksha, unless you are required for specific rituals such as reverence karma. These tasks are associated with individual grooming and pride, which are not encouraged during mourning time.
4. Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol
Pitu Paksha is a period of spiritual discipline. Consumption of meat, fish, eggs and alcohol is prohibited, as it is believed to pollute the body and brain, making a holy rites or being an ineligible to join the spiritual field.
5. Do not lie, cheat, or hurt others
This period is not only about external rituals, but also internal purification. The functions of deception, anger, violence, or loss produce negative deeds and can offend the ancestral spirits. Practicing the truth, charity and compassion is encouraged to receive the blessings of the ancestors.
6. Never perform Pitu Parts without proper rituals or guidance
Doing reverence ritual without knowing the appropriate method can be ineffective or even derogatory. It is recommended to consult a knowledgeable priest or to follow the scriptures that the rites are performed correctly, with the correct mantras and procedures.
7. Don’t forget to offer tarpan and charity
Neglect of Tarpan (offering of water mixed with sesame, barley, and kusa grass) or failure to offer food or donations to the poor and Brahmins is considered an incomplete observation. Charity is an essential aspect of Pitu Paksha and helps in submitting virtue (spiritual ability) for both living and departed.
