Every time he mentions the name, S Karthik has a glow in his eye. A mild smile is formed in her lips and she spontaneously straightens her shoulders in preparing to say: “Thalaor.” For superstar Rajinikanth, 48 -year -old reserves are a rare kind of love. “He is like God for me,” Karthik says, takes us to the temple he has made for the actor. Karthik has converted a part of his house in Thirumangalam near Madurai to Sri Aulmigu Rajni Kovil, which is completed with a sanctuary.

The centerpiece of the 700 sqft place is a 3.5 feet long stone statue of the actor in a pose from its prestigious 1989 film. It all looks real. But for Karthik and his family, praying to Rajni is a everyday ritual, something they do with honesty. In the celebration of the actor who has completed 50 years in the film industry, Karthik has pasted the flakes cut-out from his films-there are more than 5,500 pictures covering each inch of the room, including fans of the Fan. The first statue was installed in October 2023, and the main statue in which he worshiped was opened on 12 December 2024. Karthik is not associated with any Rajinikanth fan clubs and says that he does not do so as a gimmick. “I do not take prasad or money from those who visit the temple,” they say. Last year, he received a call from the actor’s office, inviting him and his family for a meeting. This is a day when Karthik will never forget. “Thalaor took me around his house, showing me to the gurus and gods he prayed … we spent 40 minutes together,” they say. Karthik’s office is adorned with photographs framed from the meeting. “He said that he hopes to meet us every year,” he says.
Like most of the actor’s dying fans, Karthik has watched every Rajni film. “At home, we see nothing other than Thalaor films,” he talks. “When his film plays in theaters, we see it as a family week after the week until it moves.” For him, no matter how good the film is or who is the director. He says, “I care that the big screen is looking at Thalaor.”
He knows that some people can ridicule her passion, but it does not bother her. “This is my way of showing my love,” he says. On our way, he hands us a box of sweets: Shri Arulmigu Rajni Kovil from Prasadam.
