According to the BFI’s official website, the list is created with the help of 25 film critics, each of whom nominate a film that “represents the years 2000 to 2024 and is a top-class film.”
“From our perspective in 2024, we sit a quarter of the way through the 21st century. To acknowledge this milestone, we’ve enlisted the help of 25 of our finest critics, and asked each to nominate a film that is pivotal in our cinematic era – a film that could be placed in a time capsule for cinema lovers in the 22nd century and beyond, a film that represents the years from 2000 to 2024 and is also a high watermark.
“Listed chronologically, these 25 entries – one from every year – form a fascinating snapshot of our times. With no aspirations to comprehensiveness, this is a subjective, esoteric, perhaps even provocative collection of films. From the U.K. to Brazil, China to Lesotho, independent successes to Hollywood hits and films that can’t be categorized altogether, our cover feature celebrates the films of the century so far,” the blurb reads. BlackRanjith’s fourth feature film and his second with Rajinikanth, Karikalan is the story of aka Kaala, a favourite figure of the oppressed slum dwellers of Mumbai’s Dharavi. The film depicts Kaala’s battle against a fascist minister and a business mogul named Hari Dhadha and his plans to grab Dharavi’s land and evict its residents.
The film, which had music composed by Santosh Narayanan, also featured Nana Patekar, Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Samuthirakani, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil and Manikandan in pivotal roles. Released in theatres on 7 June 2018, the film earned critical and commercial success.
