Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) CoolieAnd instead accepted a ‘A’ certificate, which made it impregnable for audiences under 18 years of age to watch the film in cinema’saters.

Justice TV presented in front of Thomilselvi, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) ARL. Sundson said: “At the time of hearing, it was proposed to them that if you want a U/A certificate, something else should be made. He supported a support that we do not want any deduction, but give us the ‘A’ certificate. He accepted the ‘A’ certificate and no longer a volt face.”

The submission was conducted on August 4, 2005 by CBFC during the hearing of a citizen diverse appeal filed by the production firm for action, through which the film was issued a ‘A’ certificate, and a resulting direction was issued to the board to issue a U/A certificate. The ASG said, there was absolutely no request to hear the appeal since the film was released on 14 August.

Opposing the request made by the production firm for the preliminary hearing of the appeal filed only before the High Court on Tuesday (August 20, 2025), the ASG said, there was no threat to eviction or demolition in the current case, such as the court would need to hear it on priority. He requested the court till August 25, 2025 to file a counter affidavit for CBFC.

Listing the sequence of events, he said, “The production firm applied for CBFC Certification on July 28, 2025, and obtained the ‘A’ certificate on August 4, 2025. About 10 days later, the appellant chose to release the film in theaters and a week later, it suddenly demanded a U/A certification from the High Court. It cannot insist on immediate hearing after such a long delay, the ASG said.

After listening to both sides, the judge said that he would provide enough time for CBFC to file his counter affidavit as he had gone to the past for about a week since the release of the film.

In its appeal, the production firm said, it produced Coolie To celebrate 50 years in the film industry of Mr. Rajinikanth, and the film became a “mega blockbuster” due to its pan-India star-cast, which included Nagarjuna Akineni, Aamir Khan and others. However, the actor’s broad fan base, cutting in all age groups, was unable to watch the film due to ‘A’ certification, complained.
