The festival, which celebrates the eternal bond between brothers and sisters, will be seen in Raksha Bandhan Saturday, August 9, 2025. On this day, the sisters bind a rakhi, or defense thread around their brothers’ wrists, pray for their good, while brothers promise for a lifetime security.
But once the ceremony fades, once a question arises: when should you remove your rakhi, and what is the right way to dispose of it? Although it may look like a small detail, in this case both tradition and hygiene say.
When should you remove Rakhi?
As per Hindu beliefs
Traditionally, a rakhi can be worn for 15 days, from Sawan Purnima to Bhadrapada Amavasya.
â–º Some rituals are suggested to remove it after 3, 7 or 11 days.
â–º Other people wait till Janamashtami or Ganesh Chaturthi.
â–º Rakhi should be ideally tied at least 24 hours after tying it.
â–º Always remove it before the onset of Pitu Laksha, which is a period dedicated to ancestral rituals.
Scientific
From the perspective of cleanliness, it is best not to keep Rakhi for a very long time. Since it is usually made of cotton or silk thread, it can trap dirt, sweat and moisture, becoming a reproductive ground for bacteria. Wear it while clean and intact, but avoid use for a long time.
How to deal with your rakhi properly
Rakhi is a sacred symbol of love and safety, so it is considered derogatory by throwing it into the garbage. Here are the ways of respectable disposal:
â–º Dip it into a river or a clean water body.
â–º Tie it from a holy tree.
â–º To bury it near a plant at home.
These methods respect the emotional and spiritual significance of Rakhi, keeping the Act respectable.
Rakhi can be a small thread, but it carries a deep emotional and spiritual weight. By removing it at the right time and settling it respectfully, you preserve the real essence of Raksha Bandhan for a long time after the day has passed.
Accurate rakhi timing and auspicious time
Raksha bandhan thread ceremony time:
5:47 am to 1:24 pm
total duration: 7 hours 37 minutes
Bhadra period ends: Before sunrise
Purnima Tithi:
Starts: August 8, 2025, 2:12 pm
Ends: August 9, 2025, 1:24 pm
According to Hindu tradition, the dislike period (late afternoon) is the most auspicious for tying Rakhi. If this is not possible, the performance period (evening) is also considered sacred. The absence of Bhadra period makes it perfect to perform all Raksha Bandhan rituals on 9 August without hesitation.
