‘Red Rooms’ trailer: Surreal French psychological thriller based on deep web urban legend

Utopia has released the eagerly awaited trailer for Pascal Plante’s critically acclaimed horror film. Red RoomsThe film, which will make its U.S. theater debut, will premiere at the IFC Center in New York on Friday, Sept. 6, with Plante attending the opening ceremony.

Red Rooms marks Plante’s third narrative feature, Nadia, the butterfly (2020) and Fake Tattoo (2018). The film stars Quebec actors Juliette Gariépy, Laurie Babin and Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, whose stellar performances have garnered praise on the festival circuit.

The story revolves around Kelly-Anne, a young woman deeply immersed in the trial of Ludovic Chevalier, accused of the brutal murders of three teenage girls. The film closely depicts her obsession with the case and her behavior with other people who regularly visit the court, revealing the psychological impact it has on her. As the trial progresses, Kelly-Anne’s obsession grows, blurring the lines between her reality and her dark obsession.

This indie psychological thriller, originally titled Les Chambres Rouges in French, first premiered at the 2023 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. It has since wowed audiences at several prestigious festivals, including the Fantasia International Film Festival, the BFI London Film Festival, and the Busan International Film Festival.

Inspired by the infamous dark web myth of the violent “Red Room”, the film reflects the public’s fascination with serial killers. The trailer hints at a mix of true-crime intrigue and genre cinema, which seeks to deliver a disturbing experience.

Red Rooms It has already won numerous awards, triumphing in the 2023 Fantasia Cheval Noir competition and winning accolades for Best Performance (Juliette Gariépy), Best Screenplay, Best Film and Best Motion Picture Score. The film has also been nominated for five Canadian Screen Awards and 13 Iris, with Gariépy and Babin taking home the top honours.

The film will officially release in US theaters on September 1.
