New Delhi: Tamil actor Suria starrer ‘Retro’ hit theaters on today, Thursday, 01 May 2025 and the highly anticipated action thriller received widespread reactions from nationwide fans.
On its release, the Indian Tamil-language romantic action drama film was written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Natisense took X (East Twitter) to express his praise for the film, one of which called the film as ‘Pure Cinema’.
Written and directed by Subberaj, retro investigated the life of a gangster, who attempts to lead a peaceful existence after promising his wife. The artists include Pooja Hegde in a lead role, with Malayalam stars Jujo George and Jairam and Tamil actors Karunakaran.
While expectations were high, initial audience reviews offer a mixed bag.
An enthusiastic fan said the film as a victorious return to Suria, “Finally made @Suriya_offl NA return and dust #rretro pure cinema a karthik subbaraj padam #Retrofromtoday”.
However, not all reactions were positive. Another user called retro “Karthik Subbaraj’s career as the worst film”, which criticizes the script, praising Surya and others’ performance. The user commented, “#Rretro Karthik Subbaraj’s career is the worst film … under AVG,”.

A third audience offered a lukewarm review, “average” said with a passable second half: “#Retro average film … for a time in a time”.

A foreign audience has so far gone to labeled the film as a “disaster”, praising only Pooja Hegde’s performance, criticizing the lack of clarity in the script in the script. “Another disaster from Suriya … painful for viewers, read the tweet.

Despite various reactions, retro’s release has created significant discussion, with high-octane action and a star-stad cast, the film still promises to fans of style.
