Robert Benton, three -time Academy Award winning filmmaker is known for the direction of the 1979 Best Picture Winner of 1979 Cramer vs Cramer And co-written to groundbreaking Bonnie and ClydeHe died on Sunday in Manhattan. He was 92 years old. His death was confirmed by his assistant and manager, Marisa Forzano.
Benton’s career spread over four decades, during which he earned praise for both his writing and direction. His writing cooperation led the 1967 film Bonnie and ClydeWhich, after initial rejection, became a cultural milestone and earned them an Oscar nomination for the best original script.
Benton started his direction with 1972 Bad Company And widely recognized with The late show (1977), a nair-tinged detective film starring Art Carney and Lily Tomlin. He came with his major success Cramer vs CramerA drama about divorce and paternity starring Dustin Hoffman and Meril Streep. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Pictures, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director for Benton and Best Customized Screen.
He continued to write and direct many character-driven plays. Place in heart (1984), inspired by his Texas upright, he earned another Oscar for the best original screenplay and won Sally Field her second best actress. Later included in films nobody’s Fool (1994), Dinner (1998), and the human Stain (2003). While not all the box office success, he was often praised for his strong performance and thoughtful writing.
During his career, Benton was recognized for his contribution to the film. He received the Laurel Award for Writers Guild of the US Ian McLeannen Hunter Award in 1995 and the Laurel Award for Screening in 2007.
Born in Waxy, Texas, Benton studied at the University of Texas and Columbia. Before going to the film, he worked in publication and aspired to become a painter. He is alive by his son, John.
