Did you know that the makers of Deadpool and Wolverine planned to cast Robert Downey Jr. for a cameo in Iron Man? Here’s what the writers revealed.

Deadpool and Wolverine continue to do well at the global box office. Fans were also delighted to see several cameos and Easter eggs in the film. In a new video Interview With IndieWire, co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have revealed that a major star flatly refused to do a cameo in the film, even though it is a rare occurrence that someone would say no to Ryan Reynolds. It was Robert Downey Jr., and the writers reveal what made him refuse. Paul said they wanted Robert to make a cameo and wrote a scene with him in mind. He said, “Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about Doctor Doom. And there was no way he was going to do both. And then we said, “Oh, Downey doesn’t say ‘no’ to Ryan Reynolds, right? Nobody says no to Ryan Reynolds.” And Ryan rebuked him. We wrote the scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know behind the scenes was the Doctor Doom thing.”

Rhett said, “It was similar to what you saw when he rejected Wade. He just said he wasn’t a team player or something and he questioned his team player abilities. So it was actually very close to the scene that you saw. There were two people in it instead of one. And then John [Favreau] He was attached to it from the beginning. It was great. I mean, look, we would have loved to have Downey. But, at the same time, I think Marvel had an ace up their sleeve who was going to come back in this different character. So, making him Tony Stark? Knowing that Doctor Doom was going to come right after that? It didn’t make sense.”

Last month, Robert Downey Jr. announced his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as supervillain Doctor Doom. His casting was announced by MCU president Kevin Feige during San Diego Comic-Con.
