New Delhi:
Ahead of the release of Ulaj, Roshan Mathew shared his reaction to co-star Gulshan Devaiah’s comment about him “not connecting” with Janhvi Kapoor in an interview. Indian Express. Praising Gulshan Devaiah’s candour and frankness, Roshan Mathew told the Indian Express, “It was a great line! The amount of candour in it was so refreshing! We have somehow set this standard that when we are promoting a film, we all have to pretend that we love each other and have only good things to say about each other.” Roshan added, “I have always noticed that we are never able to answer the question ‘what difficulties did you face while shooting’ properly, because we feel the pressure to put a positive spin on everything.”
For those who need a little background, here’s the update. In an interview with Film Companion, Gulshan opened up about working with Janhvi Kapoor in the film. The actor said that he and Janhvi “didn’t match at all”. “It’s not like we sat down and chatted, we didn’t match at all, really. I don’t think she finds me funny, interesting or anything like that. Yes, but we don’t! I was like, ‘Bhai we don’t match, that’s not happening. So, it’s not going to happen that we spend time and get to know someone and use that familiarity in the performance. It’s not going to happen. It happens with other actors in other places, you meet each other like that. Not necessarily become friends but you find something similar about them, interesting or something to do together,” the actor said.
However, Gulshan also praised Janhvi Kapoor’s professionalism on the set. He said, “But I never felt like it was coming in the way of us doing our scenes, it never felt like ‘Oh I’m not getting enough or there’s something missing.’ I never felt like that. We were trying to achieve what the director wanted and it was coming together! Because she is a professional actress, doing her job.”
Talking about his equation with Janhvi Kapoor, Roshan said that they “really connect.” Roshan added, “But yes, Janhvi and I really connect! Ever since we started our rehearsals, and since most of my scenes were with her, we spent a lot of time preparing for the film. We had an easy camaraderie with her. I started shooting for Uljhan after Janhvi started filming, and I had to start with a long difficult scene. It was a stressful night and you connect even more in such situations! I really enjoyed my shoot with Janhvi.”
Apart from Janhvi Kapoor, Ulazh also stars Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, Miang Chang, Rajesh Tailang and Adil Hussain. The film is directed by Sudhanshu Saria.
