Roshan Matthew is ready to play an intense and pungent man in the upcoming Hindi web series Kankajura, Hindi adaptation of Israeli web series Adhela (2019) falls on Soniliv on 30 May. The series also stars Mohit Raina, Sarah Jane Dies and Tinera Haldar.
In the series, Roshan played the role of Ansu, a young man who returns to his brother Max after 14 years of imprisonment. The past of Ansu inhibit his relationship with Max, and his life gets stuck in a web of mysteries, and betrays.
Under the attractive personality of Roshan is a gift to play wicked and flawed characters that often leave a mark. For example, in his recent Malayalam film HeavenWho is established in Sri Lanka, Roshan plays the role of a person who shows his vigor to cover his flaws in his relationship with his wife (played by Darshan Rajendran).
Over the years, the actor has found a way to crack the roles that come with several layers. Roshan talked Hindu Regarding various stages of his career so far, and developing into an actor in industries. Part:
In ‘Kankajura’, you play someone with a dark past. It seems that you have a disturbed relationship with your brother. The series is mostly about what happens in the present, but your behavior will have to show the effect of your past. What goes into playing such roles?
The script has some amount of detailing, as what was really happened in his (brother’s) past, and how his childhood was probably. There is enough signs for us to create our story around it. I think this is where an actor and director explains. I ask myself, ‘Could he say that’? ‘Or could he think or act like this in this way’? So, you make a backstory in your head.
A character calls you innocent is still very dangerous. This is the correct description of a twisted person. How different is this type of illustration compared to other villains you performed?
I do not see Asu as a villain. Because whatever he does is easy to justify. There are reasons behind what he is doing. At some points, he takes extreme measures. This is not something that I will resort to as a person. On a very fair scale of right and wrong, he can certainly be wrong for some time. But once you understand the context of his actions, you have sympathy with him. He is a little careless, someone who does anything to achieve what he wants.

You got your first big break with ‘Anandam’ (2016), a good-age film in which you played the role of young Rockstar Gautham, who loves Western music. Ever since we have seen you in such a role, it has been some time since. Has style lost its glow?
Very honestly, I remember this. The style is delightful. Even when I sit to watch a film, there is a certain kind of relaxation that comes from watching something very light and intimidating. As actors, we want to try all styles. This keeps us light and happy on our feet. Over the years, there have been some missing opportunities due to various factors, and I regret them. They were felt-good stories. However, we find ways to be part of them. For example, my friend and I are doing a drama. It is called Goodbye bypassThis is a full fun comedy ride. Before we reached the exact script of the drama, we were very sure that the mood of the drama was to be lighter. Even Kankajura It is not so intense that it is going to be a difficult watch. This is a very attractive show.

In an interview, you were described as “a cool face between uncontrolled curl and beard”. It seems like a great idea to keep someone with pleasant features in a misleading character. This can surprise people. For example, I looked at ‘Kappela’, did not know what the film was about, and I was surprised how your character changed finally …
There is a lot about what you get from the eye in visual medium like cinema. How a person looks and what a person who does not know an actor at all, gauge alone, is a matter of debate. And it is so primary that actors do not even know that the way they see they are put in a particular character. For me, after this project is over, attacks in retrospect. I do not see the crowd on the monitor. When I see the last output, I think, ‘Okay, so this is what they saw in the beginning when they contacted me.’ I always wanted to experiment with my look. For HuntI removed the beard completely, and when I saw in the mirror, I felt like a different person. My next release in Malayalam is melodyDirected by Shahi Kabir (Ella Visa PoonchiraI play a policeman, and my appearance changes. When I am shooting a film, the look changes in AIDS because I think I am someone else.

Your only second full range after ‘Kankajura’ ‘Power’ (2024). You played a cameo in the Malayalam series ‘Master Peace’. Did you have to dodge many scripts to feel right for you?
When compared to the shooting of a Malayalam film, a web series requires a long -term commitment. Therefore, whenever I choose to do a series, I have to make peace with the fact that I am going to remember some film projects. Some films look exciting, but I let him go with a heavy heart. So, this long commitment that I am going to improve for a particular series is worth it. with Hunt And KankajuraThe crew matters to me. Richie Mehta directed a show, such as with actors like Nimisha and Divyandu, there was a strong reason to say yes HuntFor KankajuraRajiv Rai was a cinematographer, and Chandan Arora co-written the story. These people do something very original and exciting.

The Hindi industry has made huge progress in the web series space, while Malayalam cinema is known for its new age content. Do you find it difficult to balance two industries?
There is some amount of trade-off, and it is out of your control. Within the Malayalam industry, I have a certain type of familiarity with people. Therefore, when two projects are colliding, I can discuss things and portray things around. When you are working in another industry, and something else comes, the best thing is to reject it. It avoids complications.
You said that you struggled for the first two or three days on the set of ‘Chocad’ (2020). This was your first major Hindi project, and you were working with an experienced producer like Anurag Kashyap. How have you developed as an artist in Hindi?
I have become more comfortable with the idea of working in a separate industry. I do not feel orphan. I do not get uprooted from my house. I felt this while working Kankajura And Ulj (2024), The last two projects I did in Hindi. For HuntWe shot a lot in Kerala, so it did not count as a project in a separate industry for me. I am someone who can quickly find my comfort in new places.
How has your days help you develop as Hindi actor in Drama School Mumbai?
This is about what we access from within. The moment I am in Bombay, I think an entire side of my personality is alive. I have spent a few milestones of my life in the city. Drama school led to so much change and self-consciousness. My closest friend is from that school. I think I trust the belief that my friends and faculty have given me the play from school. Even if Hindi is not my mother tongue, it has become a language that I can access. I can tap in Hindi in a certain level of honesty.
How keen Malayalam filmmakers are about the discovery of web series space?
People are slowly starting tapping in the capacity of the format. There are very few projects that have surfaced. But some exciting are coming soon. On Sonyliv, I think the series of farmers RK is going to be exciting. It is called History of 4.5 gangsMithun Manuel Thomas (Ajam Patira, Abraham Ozler) Has created one. For filmmakers in Kerala, time is a huge factor because how quickly Malayalam films are made. However, for a web series, plans revolve around here. This is a challenge to continuously coordinate with OTT platforms kept in Bombay (Mumbai). Setting all plans quickly and shooting for such a long period is pain in this particular format for Malayalam filmmakers.
