Ruby Rose has launched a scathing attack on Sidney Sweeney over the poor performance of Christy at the box office, which is inspired by the life of boxing legend Christy Martin.
The sports biopic, which came out on November 7, only grossed $1.3 million in its first weekend, despite being released in over 2,000 theaters. According to USA Today, it is currently ranked 12th on the worst wide openings list.
Ruby Rose criticizes Sidney Sweeney
On November 10, the Orange Is the New Black alum called Sweeney a “cretin” in a post on Threads, and said he “ruined” the project. Rose further told that earlier talks were going on with her to work in this film.
In her post, Rose said that the film’s original script was “incredible” and “life-changing”, while she was attached to play the role of Cherry.
She wrote, “Everyone had experience with the original material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”
Rose later condemned comments made by Sweeney following the film’s unexpected box office results.
He wrote, “Talking about it being a flop for their PR and saying SS did it for ‘the people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see a guy who hates them walking around pretending to be us. You’re an idiot and you ruined the movie. Period. Christie deserved better.” The Guardian reported in August that Sweeney is a registered Republican voter in Florida.

In a recent Instagram post, Sweeney said she was “deeply proud” of the film and was proud to represent “someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.” He further termed it “one of the greatest honors of my life”, and said it symbolized “survival, courage and hope”.
What did Christy Martin say about the biopic?
In September, Martin praised Sweeney for portraying his life in the film. Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival on September 5, Martin called himself a “very shy” and “very reserved” person. Martin said that his goal in boxing was to “beat everybody”.
Martin said, “So I have these two parts of my personality, and I also think Sydney Sweeney is doing such a wonderful job, because she’s become a completely different person than any of you expected.”
