LOS ANGELES (AP) — Anthony and Joe Russo, better known as the Russo Brothers, may return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct the next two “Avengers” films.
The duo, who have directed four of Marvel Studios’ biggest and best-reviewed films, are in early talks to oversee the fifth and sixth films in the popular franchise, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
According to insiders, several names were in the running for the position, including “Deadpool and Wolverine” director Shawn Levy, who was offered the position.
Russo, who moved to big-screen spectaculars after making his mark in the TV comedies “Arrested Development” and “Community,” began his Marvel career in 2014 with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
He directed “Captain America: Civil War” and two major superhero movies, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Over the past five years, the filmmaker shifted gears to backing projects through his AGBO banner, whose credits include best picture Oscar winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and collaborations with streamers including the “Citadel” series and “Extraction” films with Amazon and Netflix, respectively.
For OTT, he has directed “Cherry” for Apple and “The Gray Man” for Netflix, which is also backing his upcoming film “The Electric State”.
The fifth “Avengers” film was titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and was to star Jonathan Majors as the time-traveling villain Kang. After Majors pleaded guilty to assault and harassment, the studio cut ties with the actor.
The project suffered a setback even before the verdict in the Majors case was announced, when Destin Daniel Cretton resigned as director.
