“I focus on them about the difference between their childhood and my childhood or my wife’s childhood,” Reynolds said of his four children—James, 9, Inez, 8, and Betty, 5, and Olin, who was born in 2023. I don’t try to impose.” An interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Friday.
The Free Guy star described how he and his wife grew up apart from their children. “We both grew up very working class, and I remember when they were very young, I would say or think, like, ‘Oh my God, I never got a gift like this when I was a kid. ‘Or,’ Reynolds recalled, ‘I never would have had the luxury of getting takeout,’ ‘or whatever.’
However, Reynolds ultimately realized that “it’s not really a bag of rocks for them to carry,” adding that her children are “already exposed to gratitude.” He explained that his youth understand the world so well that they have “a strong sense of empathy.”
“These are the things I would think about [would indicate] We’re doing OK — if our kids can empathize with other people and other kids,” Reynolds confessed, adding that he agreed that there is a difference in his and his children’s lives. He said, “When I was a kid, you would just suck it up, run out of the house and be back by sunset, which I can’t even imagine now.”
