Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was injured after he was attacked with a knife by an intruder at his Mumbai home on Thursday morning, January 16, officials said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the media on Thursday afternoon that the attack on Saif is an unfortunate incident, but it is not right to call Mumbai unsafe.
Fadnavis said, “It is an unfortunate incident, but it would be wrong to call Mumbai unsafe. Mumbai is still one of the safest metros in the country. The police are investigating the incident.”
Saif Ali Khan, 54, was admitted to the hospital and required a medical procedure following the incident. Here’s a recap of what we know so far.
What happened at Saif’s house on 16 January?
- Saif Ali Khan was sleeping on the 11th floor of his Bandra (West) house in Mumbai when he woke up to suspicious sounds.
- The incident happened around 2.30 pm on Thursday night.
- Saif got up and confronted the intruder and a scuffle ensued.
- The intruder stabbed Saif six times and fled from the spot.
- Bandra Police got a call at 3 in the morning.
- Saif Ali Khan’s wife, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, went out for dinner with her sister Karisma Kapoor and friends Sonam and Rhea Kapoor on Wednesday evening.
- Kareena returned home at around 1.30 in the night.
- After the attack, Kareena was seen outside her Bandra house in a video.

What did Lilavati Hospital say?
- Saif Ali Khan was taken to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai at 3.30 am.
- Saif Ali Khan suffered six knife wounds, one of which was dangerously close to the spinal cord.
- Dr Neeraj Uttamani, COO of Lilavati Hospital, said in a statement that Saif Ali Khan was stabbed by an unknown person at his Bandra home and was brought to the hospital around 3.30 am.
- Saif Ali Khan’s operation was performed by a team of doctors led by neurosurgeon Dr. Nitin Dange, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Leena Jain and anesthesiologist Dr. Nisha Gandhi.
- “Saif Ali Khan was stabbed in the spine with a knife,” Dr Neeraj Uttamani said at a media briefing on Thursday afternoon.
- Lilavati’s team had to repair leaking spinal fluid. There were two deep wounds on the hands and neck, which were repaired with plastic surgery.
- Saif underwent a 2.5-hour neurosurgery at Lilavati Hospital.
- Plastic surgery and wound repair were also part of the medical procedures that Saif underwent at Lilavati Hospital.
- The hospital confirmed that Saif is now completely stable and out of danger.
- A statement from Saif Ali Khan’s team said that the actor is currently fine and doctors are monitoring his progress.
what did the police say
- An FIR has been lodged at Bandra Police Station against an intruder.
- A police officer told PTI That an unknown person entered Saif Ali Khan’s house, and some of the actor’s family members were also present in the house at the time of the attack.
- Police are interrogating three attendants working at Saif Ali Khan’s house.
- Police say that Saif Ali Khan’s attacker is suspected to be a servant working in his house, as CCTV footage of the building shows that no outsider enters the building after midnight.
- After interrogating all the servants and employees of Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra house, the police suspect that the attacker appears to be an acquaintance of one of the servants working there.
- Speaking to the media, a forensic department official said, “We have collected fingerprints from the spot.”
- Mumbai Crime Branch has been entrusted with the task of parallel investigation.
- NDTV has exclusively learned that the Mumbai Crime Branch has zeroed in on a suspect who is allegedly behind the attack on Saif Ali Khan.
- According to the Crime Branch, an unknown person entered Saif’s house from the adjacent building and entered his house by jumping over the wall.
- The crime branch has formed 15 teams to search for the suspect.
- A team is scanning CCTV footage for clues.
- Three teams have left for different areas of Mumbai.

- On Thursday morning, sniffer dogs were seen outside Saif’s Bandra (West) house.
- According to Mumbai Police, the attack took place late on Wednesday night when the intruder had a scuffle with the actor’s maid.
- As Saif Ali Khan tried to intervene and calm the situation, the unidentified man became aggressive, leading to a scuffle in which the actor was injured.
- At present the police is investigating the matter.
- Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam told ANI“There was a scuffle between the actor and the intruder. The actor is injured and is being treated. Investigation is underway.”
Statements from Saif and Kareena’s team
- A statement from Saif Ali Khan’s team read, “There was an attempted theft at the residence of Mr. Saif Ali Khan. He is currently undergoing surgery in the hospital. We request the media and fans to be patient.” Let’s do it. This is a police matter.”
- Kareena Kapoor’s team confirmed that the rest of the family members are fine. The statement read, “Last night, an attempt was made at the house of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Saif has suffered an injury to his hand, for which he is in the hospital and undergoing a procedure. The rest of the family members Okay. We request the media and fans to be patient and not speculate further as the police are already conducting their proper investigation.
