Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India won the top prize in all formats. Under his captaincy, India topped the Test rankings for 18 months from December 2009. The team won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the T20 World Cup in 2007 under his captaincy.

Dhoni’s journey is one of the most inspirational journeys in sports history.

From working as a ticket collector at a railway station, he became India’s biggest trophy collector, and led the team to the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 as captain.

He made his international debut in 2004 and made his mark as a ferocious hitter of the cricket ball but over time he adapted into a finisher who would lead his team to victory with his calculated aggression and astute tactics. Known as “Thala” (leader) of Chennai Super Kings, Dhoni played 98 T20 matches for India, scoring 1,617 runs at an average of 37.60 and a strike rate of 126.13.

As a captain, he led India in 60 Test matches, of which India won 27, lost 18 and drew 15.

With a win percentage of 45.00, he is one of India’s most successful captains across all eras. He led Team India to the number one ranking in the ICC Test rankings.

He is also the only Indian captain to whitewash Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, doing so in the 2010–11 and 2012–13 series.

People’s favourite ‘Mahi’ led India in 72 T20 matches, out of which 41 were won, 28 were lost, one match was tied and two matches were unsuccessful. His winning percentage is 56.94.

Apart from leading India to ICC titles, he has also led the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise to victories in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Champions League T20. He has led CSK to the IPL title five times in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.

Dhoni has led CSK to the Champions League T20 title twice in 2010 and 2014. Dhoni has played 264 IPL matches, most of which he has played for CSK, apart from this he has also played with Rising Pune Supergiant from 2016 to 2017.
