Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut Khamoshi: The Musical turns 28

Mumbai: ‘Khamoshi’ released on 9 August 1996, starring Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala in lead roles. The film is the story of a talented small-town girl Annie (Koirala) who is torn between her dream of becoming a singer and taking care of her deaf and mute parents Joseph and Flavie. The film features a handsome music lover Raj (Salman) who wants to help Bella achieve her dreams, but her family is reluctant to send her out into the world as they feel they won’t accept her.

Celebrating 28 years of the film, Bhansali Productions shared a short video on their social media featuring beautiful glimpses from Khamoshi: The Musical. They further captioned it, “A timeless tale of love and music! Apart from ‘Khamoshi’, in a career spanning 28 years, Bhansali has given many notable projects like ‘Black’, ‘Padmaavat’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.

This year he entered the OTT world with his web show ‘Hiramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’.

Season 1 of this grand saga, spanning from 1920 to 1947, is set in the Hiramandi district of Lahore in British India, the environs of the courtesans. Like the geisha of Japan, the courtesans were trained in music and dance and were raised by the elite. The show centres around Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), the scheming queen of Hiramandi, and her vindictive niece Faridan (Sonakshi Sinha), who harbours ambitions of taking her aunt’s place.

The show also stars Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman and Taha Shah Badusha.

The series will return with a second season.

On the expansion of the series, Bhansali said in a statement to Netflix, “It takes a lot to make a series. This series has taken a lot. After ‘Gangubai’ [Berlinale title ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’] “The series will release in February 2022 and since then, I have worked every day without a break. So the responsibility on the series is huge,” Bhansali told Variety. “In ‘Heeramandi 2’, the women now come to the film world from Lahore. They leave Lahore after Partition and most of them settle down in the Mumbai film industry or the Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs. So we are planning a second season, let’s see where it goes,” Bhansali said.
