Save your glow: Summer skin care tips to prevent tanning

Six skin types are classified by the Fitzpatrick scale, which helps predict how different skin types react to ultraviolet (UV) light. Indian skin is more likely to tan than foreign skin, which is more prone to sunburn. Generally, Indians have a skin type of 4 or 5. Type 5 rarely burns, tans well, and may be prone to photo-dermatitis. Type 4 burns less often and tans more easily. This scale supports customized sun protection plans. For Indian skin, avoiding tanning is key. Some summer skin care tips shared by Dr. Akshay Batra, trichologist and managing director of Dr. Batra’s® Group of Companies will help you prevent and maintain your glow.

Alarming data from The Lancet reveals that Indians are set to lose a staggering 167.2 billion potential labour hours in 2021 due to heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that maximum temperatures could range from 39°C to 41°C. Their latest announcement warns of a 2-4°C rise in maximum temperatures, indicating rising temperatures and intense heat waves across the country. While some may see tan lines as a fashionable statement, they are a harsh reminder of uneven sun exposure, which increases the risk of skin diseases.

Use sunscreen

Prolonged exposure to UV rays damages the outer layer of the skin and penetrates deeper, affecting its elasticity and health. Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an INR of 30 or higher or UV+++. Careful application and reapplication every three hours is crucial to maintaining optimal protection against tanning. Apply a thick layer on all exposed areas such as the upper back, face, hands and neck area, starting at 9:00 a.m. and reapply every three hours.

stay in the shade and wear protective clothing

Stay in the shade during midday hours, usually from morning to afternoon, and avoid direct sunlight when the sun is strongest. Wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from direct sunlight. Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Hydration and Nutrition

Rising temperatures and sun exposure can make your skin dehydrated and dry. To combat this, drink 8-10 glasses of water daily. Include moisture-rich foods in your diet, such as fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cantaloupe and litchi.

Homeopathy care

To clear tanning faster, homeopathic remedy Arsenic Alb 30, 5 tablets, once a day can be taken.

It is advisable to consult a qualified homeopath for personalized recommendations based on your specific needs. By following these tips, you can enjoy the summer while keeping your skin healthy and protected from tanning and other sun-related damage.
