Sawan 2024: Know 8 unique leaves to offer to Lord Shiva, know the hidden traditions revealed

Sawan, which begins on July 22, is a holy time to worship Lord Shiva and brings special blessings to his followers. This month is extremely special for Lord Shiva and is celebrated with a variety of rituals and activities, starting from the Pratipada of Krishna Paksha to Ashadha Purnima. Devotees celebrate this auspicious time with Sawan Somvar Vrat, Mangal Gauri Vrat and Shrivrat. Lord Shiva remains the focus throughout the month and the Monday fast is especially auspicious. In 2024, Sawan will begin and end on Monday, indicating its spiritual significance.

Although vine leaves are offered to Lord Shiva during worship, many types of flowers and leaves can also be offered on Shivlinga which are considered auspicious. It is said that offering these leaves fulfills the wishes of the devotees.

To offer 8 leaves –

  1. durvaLord Shiva can accept Durva as Prasad. In Hinduism, Durva is considered equivalent to Amrit. Offering Durva increases the age of the devotee.
  2. IntoxicationYou can also offer Datura fruit and leaves to Lord Shiva. It is said that Lord Shiva likes Datura leaves very much. Therefore, if no fruit is available, you can also offer Datura leaves to him.
  3. Shami TreeThere is a mention of Shami tree in Shiva Mahapuran. It is said that you can offer Shami leaves to Lord Shiva while worshiping.
  4. ApamargaDuring the Monday puja, you can offer Apamarg leaves to Lord Shiva. It is believed that by doing this, the devotee attains happiness and prosperity.
  5. DissolveWhile worshiping Lord Shiva, cannabis is offered to him. Offering cannabis leaves on Shivlinga is also an option.
  6. aakAccording to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva loves Aak flowers and leaves very much. You can offer a set of seven, nine, eleven or twenty-one Aak leaves to Lord Shiva during the puja.
  7. Ficus religiosaPeepal tree has special significance in Hinduism. On Somvati Amavasya, you can offer Peepal leaves to Lord Shiva instead of Belpatra.
  8. bambooOffering bamboo leaves to Lord Shiva is also considered auspicious. It is believed that by doing so, the devotee is blessed with children.
