History of Sawan

The tradition of Sawan Somwar is towards ancient Hindu mythology and holy Shiva Purana. During the cosmic phenomenon known as Samadra Manthan, the churning of the ocean produced a deadly poison called halala. To protect the universe from destruction, Lord Shiva consumed poison, causing his neck to become blue and named him Neelkanth.

To reduce his sorrow, the gods and devotees offered them to cool elements such as milk and water, which is a practice that later made the basis of Sawan Puja. Since this incident took place in the month of Shravan, this period was particularly dedicated to Lord Shiva, which was marked by prayer, fasting and gratitude and acts of penance.

Importance of Sawan

The month of Sawan lies deeply in the legend of Lord Shiva, who drank the deadly poison generated during the Samudra churning to save the world. To protect her, Goddess Parvati grabbed her neck to prevent the poison from spreading through her body, saved her from more damage, but still left her in immense pain. Due to this work of sacrifice and devotion, Sawan is especially considered sacred for Lord Shiva.

Prayers offered during Sawan are considered particularly powerful. A major tradition is fasting on Monday, known as Shravan Somvar. Some devotees also begin sixteen Somwar fast, fast every Monday for sixteen weeks, even beyond Sawan. Tuesday is also special, because many married women inspect Mangal Gauri fast, praying to Goddess Parvati for the happiness and welfare of their family.

Before starting the puja rituals, devotees get up quickly and take a holy bath, making sure that both the house and the puja are completely cleaned.
