Diversity, Sean explained some of these. (Also read: Zack Snyder reacts to criticism of Superman in Deadpool and Wolverine, Henry Cavill’s cameo)
On Henry Cavill’s cameo
Henry Cavill, who recently shed his Superman cloak, appears in the film as Wolverine. “If we’re going to talk about him, we should call him by his real name, Cavillrin, which Ryan (Reynolds) coined. I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with the term. He immediately said ‘yes’ because he knew it would be subversive and playful. It was with a lot of affection for him and his work, and now that he’s appearing as a Marvel hero, it was to play with his legacy as a DC hero,” Sean said.
On Jennifer Garner’s divorce joke
Ryan’s Deadpool character included some meta jokes about Hugh Jackman’s divorce with Deborra-Lee last year and Jennifer Garner’s separation with Ben Affleck in 2015. Jennifer reprised her role of Elektra in the film, while her ex-husband has played Daredevil in the past.
“We never joked about or with anyone that we hadn’t talked to them about first. Whether it was scripted, like the line about Daredevil, or unscripted, like ‘He’s usually shirtless, but since the divorce he’s let himself loose,’ which was on-set improv, Ryan or I would always tell the lines to the cast and make sure everyone felt comfortable and that we never punched down. It was all done in a playful spirit that made everyone feel good. If Hugh and Jane didn’t find those lines funny, they wouldn’t be in the movie,” said Sean.
Lady on Deadpool
Shawn revealed that while everyone is curious about who will play Lady Deadpool, his team never planned to reveal the character in this film. While this is a possibility in a future Marvel film, they did not consider it as they planned Deadpool and Wolverine as a standalone film and not a sequel to any future MCU film.
On Channing Tatum as Gambit
Channing Tatum came out as Gambit, a character he was supposed to play in a standalone film at Fox but never got made. Sean revealed that he was one of the 25 directors who met with Channing at Fox to briefly discuss a Gambit movie. That’s why he’s grateful he was able to cast Channing as Gambit, even if only for cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine.
At the cry of Thor
At the beginning of the film, we see a glimpse of the future in which Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is crying, his head resting on Deadpool’s lap. When asked if he knew why Thor was crying, Shawn said he didn’t know. He added that he would love to answer the question someday because he believes he hasn’t stopped working with Marvel yet.
