About the Shrek Franchise

The first installment of Shrek was released in 2001 and it was a huge phenomenon. As The Guardian reports, the film grossed $487 million worldwide and made DreamWorks Animation the production powerhouse it is today. The first film was followed by Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek the Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010. The film also had two spin-offs namely Puss in Boots which released in 2011 and its sequel The Last Wish releasing in 2022. The upcoming spin-off in the franchise will be Donkey.

As reported by Variety, the making of Shrek 5 was in talks since 2018, but Chris Meledandri was adamant about bringing back the original cast for the film. He said that the vocal performances by the cast were a major factor in the success of all the previous instalments.
