Although the dance was a passion since childhood, Shubha’s family believed that he would follow his brother’s footsteps as he was chasing medicine at Bangalore Medical College at that time. However, it was also when the dancer Maya Rao moved from Delhi to Bengaluru and started the Natya Institute of Kathak and choreography which offered a degree course for dancers. “Nothing could stop me from knocking at her door, and the world of dance became wide for me.”
In the 1980s, choreography was a novel, to say nothing of a degree in it. Shubha explains that while the artists thought what such a course would be, students were equally eager about the possibilities of offering this section.
“The study of choreography was scripture-based and enough, as our foundation with Natasastra, with the dimensions of stage, lighting, language and costumes.
