Sidney Sweeney says he endorsed American Eagle Denim because of his admiration of the brand and the jeans.
Sydney Sweeney reveals her American Eagle Denim ad, which was released on July 23 this year. In her latest conversation with People magazine, the Anybody But You actress said her silence about the reaction to her ad has fueled “hate and division.” Prior to the release of The Housemaid, Sweeney combated the negative opinions that some people associated with the denim campaign.
Sydney Sweeney says she was ‘surprised’
Sydney Sweeney told People that she did the ad out of her admiration for jeans and American Eagle. Sweeney said, “I was really surprised by the response. I did it because I love the jeans and the brand.”
She added, “I do not support the views that some people chose to associate with the campaign. Many people have given me objectives and labels that are not true.” American Eagle’s denim campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” faced heavy criticism online soon after its release. While some claimed that the word “jeans” – a play on “gene” – indicated genetic superiority, others said that the ad took inspiration from Brooke Shields’ 1980s denim campaign and catered to male attraction.
Sydney Sweeney stressed that she was “against hatred and division”. “Anyone who knows me knows I’m always trying to bring people together,” said the actress, who described herself as someone who “leads with kindness.”
Sidney Sweeney on his silence
The Christy actress told the outlet that she initially wanted to keep quiet about the uproar surrounding her ad. However, she realized that her silence had the opposite effect. Sweeney said, “In the past, my stance has been to never respond to press, negative or positive. But recently I have realized that my silence on this issue has only increased the divide, not eliminated it.”
He concluded, “I hope this new year will focus more on what unites us, not what divides us.”
