LONDON: Hollywood veteran actress Sigourney Weaver will be honoured with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

A press release on the festival’s official website said that Weaver, who has been a part of several blockbuster projects in her career, including “Gorillas in the Mist” as well as franchises such as “Ghostbusters”, “Alien” and “Avatar”, will receive the honour during the 81st edition of the festival, which will be held from August 28 to September 7.

Weaver said, “I am truly honored to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from the Biennale di Venezia. It is a privilege that I share with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with over the years.”

Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera said that as a film star, Weaver “has built a bridge between the most sophisticated art-house cinema and films that connect with the public in a clear and original way, all the while remaining true to herself.”

“As an authentic collaborator, rather than a malleable tool in the hands of a director, he has contributed to the success of films by James Cameron, Paul Schrader, Peter Weir, Michael Apted, Roman Polanski, Ivan Reitman, Mike Nichols, Ang Lee and many others, each time leaving with his charismatic presence the imprint of an authentically complex personality, sometimes contradictory.

He said, “Possessed of an extraordinary temperament, delicate yet able to move without fragility, she has created the image of a woman who is self-confident and determined, dynamic and resolute; at the same time, with an endless variety of looks, she also lets out her intensely magnetic, feminine sensibility.”

A three-time Oscar nominee, Weaver will next be seen in “Dust Bunny” opposite Mads Mikkelsen, and “The Gorge” also starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy.
