Summer is a season that brings with it warmth, sunshine and lots of opportunities to spend time outdoors. However, it also comes with its own skin problems that can be challenging to deal with. Heat, humidity and increased exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can cause a variety of skin diseases and conditions, ranging from sunburns and heat rashes to acne and fungal infections.
Dr. Mandeep Singh, HOD, Plastic, Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, Paras Health Gurugram, says, “With the onset of summer, skin problems become one of the major problems affecting 30% of the people because of the hot and humid weather. Skin problems like sunburn and heat rash become a major problem whenever the skin is exposed to the sun, causing redness, pain and sometimes even blisters. “
On the other hand, some of the people who sweat a lot may experience heat rashes as the sweat gets trapped in the pores of the skin which eventually causes irritation and discomfort.
Preventive measures to protect the skin
Preventive measures are the only key to skin protection during these extremely hot conditions. According to Dr. Mandeep, “These preventive measures include the use of sunscreen, preferably SPF 50 and above, to reduce the risk of sunburn by up to 80%. Also, always wear loose and breathable clothing during the summer season It is definitely important to avoid being outside, especially in the afternoon.”
Soothing remedies for sunburn relief
If you have suffered a sunburn, there are several soothing remedies to ease the discomfort. For example, Dr. Mandeep shares, “You can use ice packs, a good amount of moisturizer containing aloe vera, and taking frequent baths can definitely provide instant relief. It is equally important to keep yourself adequately hydrated during exercise as it prevents dehydration which can occur due to excessive sweating.”
It is important to include these preventive measures in your everyday routine during summer, as this will help in effectively managing skin problems caused by UV rays.
