Tang Clan’s single-print album to be displayed at Australian Museum

SYDNEY – American hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan’s groundbreaking album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” will be played at an Australian museum from Saturday, and organisers said Friday that it has already seen huge demand and sold out of free tickets.

All time slots have been filled and about 5,000 people are still on the waiting list for the twice-a-day listening sessions, said Tasmania’s Old and New Art Museum, which will showcase the album from June 15 to 24.

“The Wu Tang album captures people’s imagination, it’s a very important part of pop culture and it’s an incredible work of art,” Jarrod Rollins, director of curatorial affairs at Mona, said in a briefing.

“The listening programs are over, all the free allotted tickets are gone, there are 5,000 people still on the waiting list,” Rollins said, adding that the museum can no longer give away any more tickets.

There is only one physical copy of the album available in the world, which was purchased by convicted pharmaceutical company executive Martin Shkreli for $2 million in 2015.

Shkreli had given it up to partially satisfy a $7.4 million forfeiture order after he pleaded guilty in 2017 to a scheme to defraud hedge fund investors and defraud investors in a pharmaceutical manufacturer.

It is now owned by non-fungible token collectors PleasureDAO, who bought the album from the U.S. government for $4 million. PleasureDAO has also sued Shkreli for making copies of the album and releasing the music to the public.
