Tarun Tahiliani’s otherworldly collection shines at India Couture Week 2024

New Delhi: Known for its blend of royal grandeur and modern comfort, the showcase enthralled the audience with its tribute to India’s rich heritage of craftsmanship.

Tahiliani’s collection, which combined traditional techniques with contemporary innovation, was a major highlight of the show.

“Imagine being wrapped in a cocoon – feeling safe, cared for, and in perfect harmony with your body and entering a new phase of confidence and awareness. For me, this is the world I want to create through my couture. ‘Otherworldly’ is a journey to a realm where comfort and ethereal beauty exist together,” Tahiliani explained.

Breaking away from the conventional view that believes couture is tantamount to discomfort, Tahiliani’s collection emphasises on blending technology and tradition to create garments that feel like a second skin.

“We are committed to blending technology and tradition to create comfortable clothing that feels like a second skin. Beauty may be subjective, but comfort and fit are not,” he added.
The collection featured a variety of silhouettes that offered both elegance and ease, including flowing lehengas, intricately draped saris and structured cholis.

Traditional crafts like embroidery, Mukesh and Chikankari are reimagined with a contemporary touch, incorporating Swarovski crystals, Aari embroidery and Zardosi.

Unique design elements such as monochromatic pichwais, carpets and florals enhanced the innovative approach of the collection, and presented a modern yet timeless sense of style.

Menswear, including embroidered sherwanis, trendy bandgalas and sleek kurtas, stood out with their sharp, tailored silhouettes and a sophisticated colour palette dominated by black.

The integration of traditional motifs with transparent fabrics and marble jaalis highlighted the balance between heritage and modernity in the collection.
The ethereal outfit was perfectly enhanced by jewellery by Sandeep Narang and Hazurilal of Shree G Jaipur, shoes by Aquazzura and makeup by MAC along with hairstyle by Aveda.

The soundtrack composed by Jayant Arora blends soulful Indian sounds with global influences, with tracks ranging from ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ to Amy Winehouse, reflecting the multifaceted modern Indian identity.

In a historic move, Tahiliani’s show was performed twice in the same day.

This decision, a first in the history of fashion, was taken to meet the huge demand from the audience who couldn’t sit for the initial presentation at The Ashok in Delhi.

India Couture Week 2024, which began on July 24, continues to be a celebration of fashion excellence. The event will conclude on July 31 with the grand finale presentation by Falguni Shane Peacock, marking the end of a week of remarkable fashion showcases.
