The Doctor Doom era is loading: Revisiting Robert Downey Jr.’s best grey roles ahead of his big Marvel return

Robert has a passion for playing a badass on screen and he does it well. However, what sets this legendary actor and his legacy apart is the admirable degree of complexity of the characters he plays even when they cross the line between black and white. By David Dobkin Judge (2014) is a great example of this. Robert plays Hank, a successful Chicago lawyer whose return to his hometown sets off a number of domino effects that ultimately affect his equation with his estranged father, ‘The Judge’.

Amount

David Fincher directing a serial killer movie? Understatement. If having Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t enough, Amount (2007) also stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo. Roberts played the overconfident and rejected newspaper reporter Paul Avery very convincingly. Due to his struggles with alcoholism as well as direct threats from the Zodiac killer, Roberts’ Paul did not receive as much credit from mainstream movie lovers as he should have.

Shane Black kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) was one of the first few films Robert chose to star in after his much-publicized rehab stint. He played Harry Lockhart, a con man whose confession is mistaken for a brilliant performance, which earns him a Hollywood screen test. Frankly, this movie isn’t that special. But Robert’s dialogue delivery against the serious but funny plot makes this one of his more nuanced performances. If you’re a true RDJ fan, kiss Kiss Bang Bang Will prove to be a hidden gem.

Robert played Vivian Thompson, a serial killer, in Neil Jordan’s 1999 psychological thriller. in dreams. seriously underrated and not all that well known, in dreams This might be a bit too dramatic for some. However, it does represent Robert’s diversity well, making one wonder why he kept away from all negative characters until Marvel’s latest plot twist.
