The drama wanders far away from the original story of Ammaiyar

SRMG works recently staged a drama on Karikkal Ammier in Bharat Kalachar. Karaikkal Ammayar is one of the only three women, and her story is recorded in Sendkizer Peria puranam,

Separate from The Play (Story and Script: Puvai Dhaya; direction: vs Sreedharan) Peria puranam in some respects. In Peria Puranam, Nidipati, a prosperous businessman of Nagapattinam, proposes a marriage between her son Parmardattan and Dhanadatna’s daughter, a rich businessman of Karikkal. But in the drama, the hero and the heroine meet, before the engagement. They argue about whether God exists, with Pittivathi, an enthusiastic devotee of Shiva, vow to prove the existence of God for the Agnayya Paramdatan. The arguments between Parvati and Shiva were considered stimulating. Parvati is surprised why Puneetwati’s marriage should be tragically eliminated. She says that men find themselves a new wife, but what happens to the poor Punitwati?

The lively exchange between Paramdatan and Punarvati and the break between Shiva and Parvati were welcomed, which increased the dramatic appeal of the play. Puneetwati finally proves Paramdattan that God exists. But Paramdatan is now filled with fear for his wife, as he sees her as divine. He leaves for Pandya Nadu, remarry, and has a daughter, whom he names Danditavath.

In the story of Sekkijhar, Paramdatn, his second wife and child needs the blessings of Punitvati. When Paramdatn says that he can no longer see her as his wife, repetition prays for Shiva Pie Uruvam (A skeletal form). Puneetwati, known as Karikkal Ammier, is actually depicted as a skeleton in bronze. In drama, however, she asks not only one Pie UruvamBut for also Mudhumai (old age). In addition, Nidipathi’s name was converted into Shivganam in the play. Such freedom should not have been taken with the original story. Comic interlude was pathetic.

Gopalakrishnan turned into a good performance as Paramdattan and Karakkal as Vanshalakshmi. But why was Parmardatan placed in makeup with more than lipstick and generous dubbing of rose in makeup? The story of Karkal Ammier could be handled better.
