The films being made in India now face three types of censorship, Nandita Das, filmmaker and actor said, speaking in a handle by Hindu.
“Someone is [from] Official body; Then many of us have to be self-sensors. Then there are some self-proclaimed patrons of culture, “he said, this adding is fundamental for any form or art, literature or expression.
Given that the films being made today are not reflecting various types of stories that are present in the society, Ms. Das said that filmmakers create the biggest threat to make a redline for themselves as they almost voluntarily kill their voice. Actor Shahna Goswami said that censorship is imposed by OTT platforms and is also afraid of backlash.
Oats and market forces
While the emergence of OTT platforms was initially considered a boon for independent films and regional cinema, speakers reported that the difference between box office and streaming platforms has been shrinking over years.
Malayalam cinema was one of the Indian film industries, which received unprecedented PAN-Indian attention since the epidemic period, thanks to the OTTS. However, JO Baby, filmmaker, reported that last year, only 4-5 Malayalam films, between 80-CD total films produced by Udyog, made it the OTT.
“Industry is in a loss, and we are facing a crisis to sell our films,” said Mr. Baby.
Ms. Das left it, given that for every independent film that made it OTT, 100 others did not. “Theater and OTT are not very different. Parameters remain the same. The limits of films are decreasing due to market forces,” he said.
No help
Ms. Das also highlighted the absence of a government body to encourage and support independent films. “Earlier, we used to NFDC [National Film Development Corporation of India]Now, there is no replacement. We cannot expect private manufacturers to see theaters as art and do something for cinema’s love. It is true that in our country, economics interferes with art, and we have such a large mainstream cinema industries, independent voice is often lost. ,
Mr. Baby, nevertheless, realized that there were audiences and supporters of the film industry, good cinema in Kerala. “We have a wonderful audience in Kerala … After 2015, a lot of Malayalam films have got PAN Indian reception. We are trying to do something different with our actors. KathlIf there is no mammutti, there is no film. He also produced the film. He [is the] The actors get support from the industry, ”he said.
He also remembered how his sleeper hit, The Great Indian KitchenWas built for festivals. After cancellation of film festivals due to epidemics, the creators approached major streaming platforms and TV channels, only to face rejection.
The film was later strengthened on an OTT platform called Ni Stream.
“The film then became a hit and it was released again on Amazon. Then I started thinking that the film initially faced rejection and realized all those who rejected it. The film became a hit because of women audiences in this country. It was like a revolution from the audience, and women audience proved men’s decisions wrong.”
Audience power
Ms. Goswami, who acted SatisfactionWhich was banned by CBFC, said Asha was with the audience.
“Thanks to the discussion of the film, not coming out, people have pirate and have seen it and I get messages from them continuously … I realized that viewers want to watch films that they can join. They are quite intelligent. You don’t need to give them a kind of cinema,” he said.
Stating that censorship should give ratings for films and should not stop expression, “The best thing is to express what they want to express what they want. And then let people choose to join them.”
