New Delhi: Composer duo Sachin Sanghvi and Jigar Saraiya are elated with the success of a “historical” film like the horror comedy “Stree 2” and want to take it as a stepping stone and not be complacent.
The composers, known as Sachin-Jigar, had created the soundtrack for 2018’s “Stree” and they returned to design the music for its much-anticipated sequel, which has grossed over Rs 100 million. Its price in India is Rs 600 crore.
Sachin, one of the pair, said it was great to have their hard work recognised.
“It’s the love of the fans that completes your journey, whether it’s your debut or you keep putting out great stuff. We probably had to achieve the milestone that one of our films has earned. 500 crores. It’s very overwhelming. Some days, I wake up in the morning pinching myself as I look at the different box office figures.
“We also have the strength to realise that we have come so far and people have given us so much love. We will work harder and break more records. The sun is shining on us but that doesn’t mean we become complacent. We should look at it as a stepping stone to move forward,” he said in an interview to PTI.
Jigar said that ‘Stree 2’ is a rare occurrence where both the film and the music have been appreciated. He composed four songs for the film, “Aaj Ki Raat”, “Khoobsurat”, “Aayi Nayi”, and “Tumhare Hi Rahenge Hum”.
He said, “Sometimes, when the songs work, the film doesn’t. It’s very rare when the film, the songs, the jokes, everything works together. The collective feeling of success makes us feel grateful. For example, we all loved the music of ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and the film did too. The film and the music together set a milestone. We are grateful to have that milestone in our career.”
Sachin said that he wants the audience to come to theatres to watch his songs in the film.
“We want people to come to the big screen in large numbers to watch the film. If every household has a 7.1 rating, why will people come to the theatre? When you can promise all-round entertainment then you can expect such results.”
“Otherwise, you can’t expect love from them if you don’t do your job properly. When we look at the streaming space, it is evident that today there are fewer songs in Hindi films and independent artists are creating more songs. We are aware of this but it motivates us.”
Citing the example of Madhubanti Bagchi, who sang a dance number titled “Aaj Ki Raat” with Tamannaah Bhatia in “Stree 2”, Sachin said today people have no qualms in accepting new voices.
He said, “A new voice on social media by making a 15-second clip becomes as popular as a film star who has worked hard in the industry for 30 years or more. Our world is getting smaller and our platform is getting bigger. We have to take it positively. ‘Stree 2’ is a great example that Hindi films can still do it.”
There was a time when songs were played in the background, Jigar said.
“Basically, Bollywood films are about songs and dance and entertainment. Our songs are so powerful that we can make people come to the theatres to watch them. We saw something similar in ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’. People loved two of its songs ‘Tere Vaaste’ and ‘Phir Aur Chahiye’ so much that we started getting messages saying ‘we went to watch the songs and we loved the film’.
“There was a time in between when the way of promotion, the way of filmmaking or the taste of the audience changed. But now it is coming back. Even the producers we are meeting are using music to sell the film. This is a good sign, we are returning to our roots, to Hindi films.”
“Stree 2” is the composer duo’s latest project with production house Maddock Films. They have previously scored soundtracks for several of the banner’s films such as “Badlapur”, “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke”, “Bala” as well as films from its ambitious horror comedy universe such as “Bhediya” and “Munjya”.
Sachin said that producer Dinesh Vijan considers Jigar and him as his younger brothers.
Sachin said, “It is very important to have trust in the team. There is a lot of coordination between Jigar and me. Also with Amitabh Bhai.”
Jigar said, “We never sell them any song, but play it for them. We never sell them any song, but play it for them. If they like it, we make it. But we never discussed with them that ‘Sir, let’s make such a song’ or they never told us ‘make such a song’.”
Sachin-Jigar’s upcoming projects include Sriram Raghavan’s “21”, Raaj Shaandilyaa’s “Vicky Aur Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video”, Pulkit’s “Malik” as well as Raj and DK’s “Citadel: Honey Bunny” series.
