Imagine starting your career in the world of acting at the age of 17. One might assume that this would give you more time and opportunity to rise to the top faster than your contemporaries. But for this future star, it meant working as an extra, playing supporting roles and having no success for over a decade. Even when he got his big break – at the age of 33 – it was on television. The actor who went from extra to A-lister
George Clooney came from a humble background. The son of a TV anchor and local councilwoman, he had his first acting gig while still in school, when he worked as an extra in the 1978 television miniseries Centennial, which was partly filmed in his hometown. He spent the next decade playing supporting roles in films and TV shows before landing a lead role in the 1988 comedy-horror film Return of the Killer Tomatoes. But it did not work at the box office. Clooney finally tasted success as Dr. Doug Ross in the medical TV drama ER (1994–99). The success of the show led to her film roles and hits such as The Perfect Storm. But it was the 2001 hit Ocean’s Eleven that established her as Hollywood royalty. He earned both critical acclaim and box office success over the next 20 years in films such as Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck, Michael Clayton, The Americans, Gravity and The Wolf.

In 2013, as Clooney was climbing the ladder of success in Hollywood, he teamed up with entrepreneurs Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman to found a tequila brand called Casamigos. The three friends said that they started the company based on their personal interest and with the intention of making tequila for their personal use, with no intention of taking the company public. However, within a few years, the brand exploded. In 2017, beverage company Diageo bought it in a deal worth $1 billion. This not only increased the brand value of Casamigos but also significantly increased Clooney’s personal wealth.

Even though George Clooney is an A-lister, he hasn’t starred in many summer blockbusters that would have made him millions of dollars in profits. The actor reportedly charges $20-35 million per film, which is much lower than some of his contemporaries and friends. Nevertheless, he is the 6th richest actor in the world with a net worth of $500 million. Among active mainstream actors, only Dwayne Johnson, Tom Cruise and Shahrukh Khan are richer than him. His net worth is more than that of big stars like Brad Pitt ($350 million), Johnny Depp ($250 million) and superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger ($400 million).
