On April 3, 1919, in Amritsar, Raginald Dior, a British Brigadier-General, ordered the soldiers to set fire to a unarmed crowd of more than 15,000 Indians gathered at Jalianwala Bagh on Baisakhi Day. The mob gathered to peacefully oppose the Rolaut Act. The murders shook the world and became a rally point for anti -British spirit in India.

The CS Nair was a prestigious Indian lawyer serving as the only Indian representative in the Viceroy’s Executive Council at the time of the massacre. Victimed by the murders, he resigned from the prestigious post, forced the British to implement changes such as cancellation of martial law in Punjab.

CS Nair later wrote a book, Gandhi and anarchy (1922), where he criticized the Lieutenant Government of Punjab Michael O’Whire during the massacre. He accused the O’Dire of removing atrocities through his oppressive administration. This, in turn, invited a complaint suit from O’Dwyer, who was then returned to England after being dismissed from Punjab.
