New Delhi: It’s been seven years since Tripti Dimri entered the world of cinema and has tasted success with films like ‘Kaala’ and ‘Animal’. However, there was a time when the national crush didn’t take herself “so seriously as an actor.”
Tripti made her debut with ‘Poster Boys’ in 2017 and followed it up with highly acclaimed projects like ‘Laila Majnu’, ‘Bulbul’, ‘Kala’ and ‘Animal’, which earned her the title of ‘National Crush’.
Talking about her seven-year journey in Hindi cinema, Tripti told IANS: “It has been very exciting. When I started, I had no idea I would be working with such great actors and directors because I never took myself so seriously as an actor before.”
After working in her first film, the actress left everything to fate. “I thought, ‘Okay, I got one film. Let’s see if I get another film or not.’ But luckily, the stars were in my favour, and I got an audition for ‘Laila Majnu’,” said the actress, who hails from Garhwal in Uttarakhand.
Tripti revealed that she did not initially go for the audition for the Imtiaz Ali-directed ‘Laila Majnu’, which released in 2018. Instead, she was spotted by the film’s casting director. “I did not go for the audition, but the casting director found me.
He said I look Kashmiri and I should audition for it and that’s how I got the film. That’s when I thought maybe there is something here for me and I should take it seriously.”
The 30-year-old star said that he had no idea what acting was. “I never took any acting classes. I had no concept of good, bad or overacting. So, after the first schedule of ‘Laila Majnu’ was over, I enrolled in acting classes and then I understood the world…”
Tripti, a graduate from Delhi University’s Sri Aurobindo College, expressed gratitude for her “extremely exciting journey”. “I think it has been an exciting and extremely thrilling journey. The love that I have received from fans of ‘Qala’, ‘Bulbul’, ‘Laila Majnu’ and ‘Animal’ makes you feel good… When you start working on a project, you want people to connect with the characters that you play. When that happens, I feel really good,” she said.
Things turned positive for Tripti after she worked in the 2023 Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Animal’, which earned her the title of “National Crush”. When asked how she feels about the title, Tripti replied, “More than the tag, it’s love. It feels amazing because, as I said, whenever you do a project, you want people to look at you and remember you and the names of the characters.
“When that happens, I feel very happy, when I step out and people call me ‘Bulbul’ or ‘Kaala’… If I go to Kashmir, nobody calls me by my name; they say ‘Laila’…” The actress said she finds the tag “amazing” but at the same time, the love she is receiving is an “overwhelming” feeling. “This love motivates you as an actor. It motivates you to work hard on your craft so that you can make people believe in you, which is important,” she added. Tripti’s latest release is ‘Bad Newz’ alongside Ammy Virk and Vicky Kaushal.
After several dramas, this is the first comedy for the actress. The actress said comedy is a difficult genre, as what the audience finds funny on screen needs to be executed very seriously during shooting. “As an actor, I think it is very difficult to succeed in it,” she said. “This is my first time doing comedy, and I was very nervous initially, because the first time is always difficult.
I was also excited because, as an actor, I always want to try different things.” Tripti said she did not want to stay in a “comfort zone”. “If you keep doing the same kind of things, you find your comfort zone. If you are in your comfort zone, there is no scope to grow,” she said.
