My two favorite things about 1996 twister Shots of flying cows and chasing storms accompanied by the blaring of Deep Purple’s ‘Highway Star’ from the huge speakers mounted on top of the van. It almost made me want to get out on the road, until I remembered the Silk Board junction. TwistersStill, an independent sequel to the Jan de Bont film is a fun ride.
Young Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) has what she thinks is a surefire way to tame tornadoes. She heads into the eye of the storm with fellow storm chasers, Javi (Anthony Ramos), his boyfriend Jeb (Daryl McCormack), Eddie (Kiernan Shipka) and Praveen (Nik Dodani) to test her theory. Things go badly and five years later, Kate is tracking the weather at a safe distance on a computer behind a desk in New York, much to the dismay of her mother, Kathy (Maura Tierney).

When Javi, who has joined the Army, asks her to help test the prototype—a more sophisticated version of his earlier weather sensor, Dorothy—she reluctantly agrees. Once they reach Oklahoma, they discover it’s a free-for-all, with storm tourists and social media stars flocking to the area. The group is led by the charismatic Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) and his crew, which includes videographer Boone (Brandon Perea), drone operator Lily (Sasha Lane), scientist Dexter (Tunde Adebimpe), and mechanic Denny (Katie O’Brien). Ben (Harry Hadden-Paton), a journalist from London, is also traveling with Tyler to write a profile on storm chasers.

As both groups race to break the speed of sound (oh Ritchie Blackmore!), Kate realizes that Javi hasn’t been completely truthful with her and Tyler hasn’t been completely superficial about hitting the subscribe button. Storms that become fiercer and more widespread due to climate change turn lives and economies upside down. Tyler proves that his heart is in the right place as he stops to rescue a dog – remember that Joe’s dog also made it to the basement just in time Twister?

Twisters It sweeps us away on a wave of spectacle. Storms are awe-inspiring and that scene in a movie theatre is like the ultimate pyrotechnic cherry on top of a dazzling VFX cake. When the screen explodes and a window to nature’s fury opens, one can only gasp in wonder.
