Two accused produced in Guwahati court in Zubeen Garg death case; SIT awaits Singapore’s reply

Guwahati: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) brought alleged accused Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahant to the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in the death case of singer Zubeen Garg.


Famous singer Zubeen Garg reportedly died while swimming in Singapore on September 19, a day before he was to perform at the Northeast India Festival.


In connection with the ongoing investigation, the SIT/CID team has brought two alleged accused from the CID office in Guwahati.


In the visuals, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta were seen entering the police van amid tight security. Both were on police remand in Singapore for their alleged involvement in the death of Zubeen Garg.

On Wednesday, the CJI Court in Guwahati sent five accused Shyamkanu Mahant, Siddharth Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya to judicial custody in the Zubeen Garg death case.


Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, SIT chief and Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta said, “We had arrested seven people, and the police custody of five people is complete, so we are producing them in the court today. The custody of the remaining two (Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahant) will be over the day after tomorrow.”

He said that two witnesses were already present in the CID office and their statements were being recorded.

He said, “One more person is likely to arrive today. The total number of people appearing before the CID has reached 10. Yesterday, we received a communication requesting us to provide the names of the officers who will go to Singapore for investigation, which is a standard procedure. We are awaiting their response…”


He further said, “We are not asking for further remand, if new facts require remand in future, we will ask for it.”


Earlier, Special DGP Gupta said that three NRIs have come from Singapore and have recorded their statements before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the death of singer Zubeen Garg.


Gupta said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) will submit the post-mortem report to the court.


Singer Zubeen Garg died reportedly while swimming in Singapore on September 19, a day before he was to perform at the Northeast India Festival.


However, recently Zubeen Garg’s bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami had alleged that the singer was poisoned in Singapore, which led to his death.
